Expert interview: Health starts with the feet

If our feet are not healthy, this can have far-reaching consequences for our whole body and our well-being. Paying regular attention to foot health and also wearing the right shoes and socks, or shoes or socks that are not too tight, is therefore such an important step. This allows us to react to the first warning signs in good time and prevent further problems, such as hallux valgus.

Above all, however, it is important not to neglect your feet. For example, if you suffer from excessive calluses in certain areas, you can already tell that something is wrong. Careful care of our feet is therefore crucial. Failure to do so is a common cause of health problems.

Paying attention to the needs of your feet helps to improve your physical and mental well-being. Podiatrist Dirk Fenzl explains below what feet reveal about health. We put questions to the expert, and here are the answers:

Why is foot health so important?

Our feet literally carry us through life – day after day, often for many hours at a time. They are our foundation, our connection to the ground. Despite this, they are unfortunately neglected far too often.

Foot health has an enormous influence on our overall well-being and posture. Problems with the feet often affect the knees, hips or back. That’s why it’s so important to look after your feet; preventively and regularly.

Does the podiatrist perhaps have an insider tip for healthy feet?

A real insider tip for me as a podiatrist? Not to take foot care seriously only when there are problems that lead to pain, but to take action beforehand.

And: walk barefoot – but the right way! Walking barefoot on natural surfaces, such as grass, sand or forest floor, is a little workout for the foot muscles and also stimulates blood circulation. And what many people underestimate is the importance of regularly caring for your feet with high-quality products.

In my practice, I like to use Spirularin HF Gel or Spirularin HF Mousse. They are quickly absorbed, non-greasy and very economical. I particularly appreciate the antimicrobial and cell-regenerative properties. Ideal for daily care and also ideal for diabetics.

Can our feet tell us something about our health?

Yes, absolutely. Our feet are a small reflection of our health. Changes to the skin, nails or the shape of the feet can indicate metabolic diseases, circulatory disorders or even neurological problems.

Especially in the case of diseases such as diabetes mellitus or a diabetic foot, it is extremely important to have your feet regularly checked and professionally cared for. Recognizing changes at an early stage can make a big difference here.

Why is it important to strengthen the feet?

Our feet consist of a multitude of small muscles, tendons and ligaments – and just like any other muscle, they need to be trained. If the foot muscles are weakened, this can lead to deformities, pain or an unsteady gait in the long term.

Strong feet mean more stability, more balance and a better quality of life, especially in old age. Small daily exercises, such as gripping your toes or rolling up a towel with your toes, can make a big difference.

“Stimulate feet” – what exactly does this mean?

In this context, stimulation means the targeted activation of nerves, muscles and blood circulation in the feet. This can be achieved through massages, foot baths or certain care products.

I am very happy to recommend Spirularin here. Not only does it provide intensive care, but its ingredients also support the regeneration and natural protective function of the skin. The antimicrobial components ensure a hygienic, well-groomed feeling without being greasy.

Regular care – is that the be-all and end-all, or not?

Quite clearly: Yes! Foot care is not a luxury, but an important part of preventive healthcare. Regular care prevents skin problems, calluses, cracks and infections. The combination of professional podiatry treatment and high-quality home care is crucial.

I am very happy to recommend Spirularin HF Mousse or HF Gel for use at home, as they are quickly absorbed, very economical and also ideal for sensitive skin, for example for diabetics. Those who care for their feet regularly simply get more out of life – in the truest sense of the word.

What should you do regularly at home to care for your feet? And when is it better to call in a professional?

At home, I recommend applying cream to your feet every day – ideally in the evening when your skin is ready to absorb it. Spirularin products are ideal for this. They not only provide intensive care, but also protect against germs and external influences thanks to their special active ingredients.

This also includes:

  1. a foot bath once a week,
  2. Gentle removal of excess calluses
  3. and careful cutting of the nails.

These measures are simply part of the basic routine.

However, there are clear limits to what you should do yourself at home. If you have ingrown nails, painful pressure points, open spots or conditions such as diabetes, it is essential to see a professional. Improper self-treatment can quickly do more harm than good.

In the podiatry practice or medical pedicure, we take a close look at this and treat it with the necessary specialist knowledge, individually tailored to your needs.
