The secret of Spirularin®:
the deep power from the sea garden.
The Spiralin®-effect
ocean pharma has been researching microalgae for more than 10 years and has examined hundreds of different algae and microalgae strains in research projects with universities and specialist institutes. Spirularin® and skinicer® products contain the unique microalgae active ingredient Spiralin®, which is obtained from the microalga Spirulina platensis through a patented process. The extraordinary feature of this alga is the special defensive properties it has developed over the course of evolution against its natural enemies such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Through these antimicrobial properties selectively targeted at harmful germs2,3, the skin can be protected from pathogenic germs. Beneficial germs are spared, however, as they pose no danger. The microbiome can thus be brought back into balance, which forms the foundation for the regeneration of the skin’s protective barrier.Protection against cell-damaging influences /
Protection against UV damage
UV rays damage cells and cause the skin to age prematurely. Every child knows this by now. The Spiralin®-microalgae, which performs photosynthesis and is therefore constantly exposed to the sun, has developed protective mechanisms that we can use for our skin cells.
Experimental studies show that collagen-forming skin cells (fibroblasts) under the influence of the polysaccharides in Spiralin® lose little or no activity after strong UV irradiation, while skin cells irradiated with the same UV dose without the microalgae protection lose almost 50 % of their cell activity.1
Regeneration of damaged skin cells
In addition to protective mechanisms, the Spiralin® microalga has also developed regeneration mechanisms that we can utilize for our skin cells. Experimental studies show that collagen-forming skin cells (fibroblasts), which have lost almost 50% of their cell activity due to UV radiation, can regain approximately 50% of the lost activity under the influence of the polysaccharides in Spiralin®¹. These cell-regenerative properties also benefit users in many problem skin situations when using care products containing Spiralin®.
Antimicrobial protective effect (against bacteria and fungi)
The inhibitory effect of Spiralin® and all finished products based on Spiralin® on potentially skin-damaging fungal strains and problematic bacterial germs (such as Staphylococcus aureus and Propionibacterium acnes) is very pronounced. Analyses by the Kiel Center for Marine Natural Products (KiWiZ) demonstrate this impressively.2 Protective effects against drug-resistant germs (MRSA): Spiralin® exhibits antibacterial protective effects even against bacterial strains that have become resistant to one or more medications (antibiotics) (MRSA).3Protective effects against viruses
Special sugar molecules (polysaccharides) in Spiralin® protect human skin cells from the penetration of viruses. Thus, formulations containing Spiralin® that have a particularly high content of these polysaccharides can protect cells susceptible to warts from the penetration of wart-causing human papillomaviruses (HPV).1,41 Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c.
